How to independently check the sound quality and telephony connection

Publication date: 09.06.2022

At the stage of planning the transition to IP-telephony, it is important to understand that a good and stable Internet is important for its correct operation. To make one call via telephony, 384 Kbps of incoming and outgoing traffic will be enough, and for good sound quality, it is important that the ping indicator is stable, i.e. changed within 40 ms.

We will talk about universal ways to check sound quality and connect to telephony in this article.

Sound quality check

For our users, there is a special test to check the sound quality – “Echo Test”. The check is carried out by calling from any internal line connected to UniTalk telephony to the short number 2000. After calling the number 2000, you will hear the robot answering machine. Just wait until the audio recording ends and say something in response – the program will play back what you said and you will hear yourself the way your interlocutor would have heard you. If you hear yourself well, without interference and interruptions, then the Internet connection is stable and its speed is sufficient for the correct operation of IP telephony. If you are hard to hear in response, then there is a problem with the speed or stability of the Internet, but it may also indicate a problem with the microphone.

Wait for the end of testing. Based on the results obtained, conclusions can be drawn as to whether you have a fast and stable Internet connection to use telephony.

Examples of a stable internet connection:

The Internet connection speed is higher than 384 Kbps, the difference between the ping indicators does not exceed 40 ms. Such indicators are suitable for the correct operation of IP-telephony.

An example of an unstable internet connection:

The Internet connection speed is below 384 Kbps, the difference between the ping indicators is more than 40 ms. Such indicators cannot ensure the correct operation of IP-telephony.
